I have recently upgraded from 3 to 4. I can download documents and open the document but I can not open documents in their proper application using the "Open in Word" option.

In fiddler I found the following

HTTP/1.1 401 Unauthorized

Content-Length: 1656

Content-Type: text/html

Server: Microsoft-IIS/6.0

WWW-Authenticate: Negotiate

WWW-Authenticate: NTLM

X-Powered-By: ASP.NET

Date: Fri, 02 May 2008 15:09:33 GMT

Proxy-Support: Session-Based-Authentication

Technical Information (for support personnel)

  • Go to Microsoft Product Support Services and perform a title search for the words HTTP and 401.
  • Open IIS Help, which is accessible in IIS Manager (inetmgr),

and search for topics titled About Security, Authentication, and About Custom Error Messages.

I tried setting permissions for "Everyone" in any possible directory that it may be using but still could not open the documents. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The following lines:

WWW-Authenticate: Negotiate
WWW-Authenticate: NTLM

indicate that there is still an overriding authentication on the website. It captures the traffic before it gets to the module.
