Hi Peter,

i've noticed that in demo portal (demo.bring2...) if i try to open a file with word using link in menu, the file was open in read only mode.

The same behavior we have noticed in our portal.

If I try to save from word the system say that the file is in read only mode.

Our system:

IIS 6.0
DNN 5
DMX 5.01
Internet explorer 7.0
Office 2003 SP3
Windows Vista SP1

Hi,

Some changes will be made to this part. Note that there was a fix in 05.00.02 as well for a read-only issue.

Hi

I'm having the same problem - when I use the "Open in Word" option, files are opening Read Only - no error message, they just open like that.

I'm using the latest version - .04

Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Dale

Hi Dale,

It's hard to say why exactly they're read-only. Here are some reasons:
- the web folders client does not authenticate itself to webdav
- you're using a superuser account (and superusers are not part of any role in the portal)
- the document was locked
- there was another authentication mechanism active on the server
- etc etc.

To debug your webdav connection your strategy is to first establish whether it's the server or the client that is at fault. For the server you need first of all to closely follow the instructions in the installation manual. When you're convinced this is good and the issue persists, you'll need to use a simple web debugger like Fiddler to see what is being transmitted. The DMX WebDAV component is easily visible in the web traffic as it sends out a header to identify itself.

Finally it's the client. The client consists of your Windows and Office versions. They need to be able to handle the connection securely. The WebDAV has been tested on both Vista and XP as well as Office 2003 and 2007. What is your config?

Hi Peter,

I'm having the same issue.

Word 2003 on Windows Server 2008 - files are opening in read-only mode - files open fine via Word 2007 on Vista or XP but open in read-only mode on Server 2008

I'll try running Fiddler to see what could be happening.

One more thing to note -

The domain administrator account can login to a remote desktop session on Windows Server 2008 and open the doc files in read/write mode but no other user account can login to a remote desktop session and open a doc file in anything other than read-only mode. When the file tries ot open, a windows login prompt pops up three times and I have to hit Ok three times and then the file opens in read-only mode. I can also cancel the login box and the file will open but in read-only mode.

All the installation steps were followed except the very last one. Reason being, we tried it but it seemed to cause a problem with the URL rewriting (replacing querystrings with hard URLs) across DNN, so we undid it. But I'm informed by the Host that Windows' own WebDAV is not installed on the server as it represents a security risk so I think it unlikely that this is the cause of the problem.

IIS, in this case, is being managed by 'Plesk' control panel software, if that might be relevant?

Client is running Windows XP and Office 2007; I'm not sure if the server is running Windows Server 2003 or 2008 but it's one or the other, so presumably that shouldn't be an issue?

Many thanks for all your help.

Shelly,

The security popup indicates there is an issue with authentication. I can only say more about this with an http trace as it informs me if the proper authentication is working or not.

Dale,

Only a trace would help in this case. If you want I can do it for you, but you'll need to contact me by email with a login.

Thanks Peter

As this is a shared server, I do not have access via Windows, only via a control panel. I should however be able to set up a user for specific files or folders below 'root' but I cannot set up a user with access to the root folder itself. Which folders he would need access too?...I'm guessing this might be Desktop Modules/Bring2Mind or the DMX folder in Portals/0/

Cheers

Dale

Hi Dale,

I'm not sure where you're driving at. WebDAV does not address content directly in your installation. It is handled in DMX and DMX is responsible for handing out the correct content. The permissions on the disk on the server have no bearing on the security in DMX or through WebDAV.

Or did I not understand your last post?

Peter,

Apologies, my fault, I misunderstood - I have emailed you a login.

Many thanks,

Dale
