Hi.  I've been reading the Administrator's Guide to learn more about Custom Attributes, and am a bit confused.  My understanding is that I can use this feature to create a custom metadata field, yet when I do so it doesn't seem to appear on the document's info screen.  Am I misunderstanding the purpose or use of this feature?

No, you're not misunderstanding the feature at all. The attribute should show up when editing an entry or when viewing the details. There is a possibility to restrict it to a particular kind of entry, but if you did not use this feature (i.e. the field 'Applies To') then it should show up. In the details screen it becomes part of the first list on screen with all the properties.
