I am new to WebDAV so this may be obvious to everyone else.
While using a DMX module where I have full permissions to the folder (View, Edit, Add, Approve) I right-click the folder then click Open in Windows Explorer.
Then I get authentication Windows dialog. So what User Name is it asking for?
Where do I create these users and how do I apply the permissions to the files that are hosted by DMX?
Also, does DMX control access at this point or do I have to setup permissions for each user completely separately in IIS?
(Yes, I have read the DMX documentation but since I have no background in WebDAV it does not make any sense to me.)
Since one of the great new features of DMX4 is WebDAV, I think we really need a tutorial about this.

Hi Lance,
Authentication is handled by DNN. It is your DNN account the server is asking for. I'll keep track of issues and questions to see where I can improve the documentation. I spent a lot of time trying to explain what WebDAV is, but I'm open to suggestions.

I did supply the DNN account credentials but the authentication box keeps popping up.
I tried this from 2 different clients on two different networks.
I trid the username alone and the webaddress\username. |

I also made sure WebDAV was enabled in IIS 6.
Are there web.config settings or other IIS 6 settings that need to be changed to allow authentication? |

You don't need to allow WebDAV (probably better not). The WebDAV is completely governed from within DNN/DMX and has nothing to do with the IIS implementation of WebDAV.
Maybe we can do this another way. If I can see one of these installations from here I can try and see if there is something I'm missing. Is that possible in your case?

Peter,
I just sent you an email with an admin account to the website.
FYI, before I enabled WebDAV in IIS 6 it was not even popping up with the authentication dialog.
Also, there was an anomoly in the web.config during setup. I corrected it and have sent you the web.config in an earlier email.

I am having the exact same problem. Webdav was running on my server an then I turned it off. |

I turned off webDAV on Lance's installation and then made sure only 'anonymous access' was set on directory security (I had to switch off 'Windows Authentication'). Can you verify?

This has now become apparent that the problem lies at the client (I think). I am getting different behaviours on different machines.
These are the behaivours:
2 machines are acting as adversited: WebDAV is perfect.
3 machines WebDAV not working at all.
1 machine cannot use Open in Word..., but Network places has access to root of Document Exchange with full functionality, open/save/delete, which should not be.
All machines were configured client site as per your instructions.
Logic: If DNN/DMX WebDav is working on 3 machines, then server should be configured properly. Therefore, there must be difference in the clients that are causing these anomolies.
I will check working configurations against not working and report my findings.

Did you ever find a reolution for this problem? I am having a similar problem, whenever I try to open in explorer I am prompted for a password. I have tried Portal credentials as well as Windows credentials and it continues prompting for a password.
Any assistance woudl be greatly appreciated.

Hi Peter,
As you suggested, I waited until you had a new version (4.02). Today, I installed it hoping that my issue will dissapear but it didn't. I am also having this same authentication error and word opens a blank page.
Please help.

Hi Vivek, Make sure to restart the application. I've noticed that some issues persist after an install but go away after all things are completely reset and all cookies are gone. In any case: I have both Win XP/Office 2003 and Vista/Office 2007 working now. Both Opening in Office from the web UI as well as opening a web folder as well as adding a web folder manually in Windows. NOTE: read the updated installation manual here: http://www.bring2mind.net...Id/1589/Default.aspxand run the reinstall config script. These changes are essential in getting everything working. With V 4.02 and DNN 4.08 I am having the same problems.If I try to map the network place from the network resources icon, I get the windows authentication prompt. Canceling out an error is displayed that the resource does not exist.
If I try to open a folder from the document management windows ("open in windows explorer") I still get the windows authentication prompt, but if hit the cancel button, the folder opens up and I can navigate the entire tree structure. I can open documents and copy them on my local pc. what I can't do is to upload documents. when I try, I get the DNN authentication request (even though I am logged in in the web site) but no user or password are accepted. The result is an error saying that I am not authorized to complete the action requested. Same thing if I try to create a new folder.
Browsing the older posts, you asked somebody if additional components were installed. One of these is DSLocalizator, which I am using (only for the localization part, all the other options are turned off) because the site will be in 9 languages.
Right now there are 200 documents loaded, we have to load about a thousand more and if we can manage to do it with WebDav it will probably be faster.

Hi Peter,
I'm experiencing the UID/Password prompt annoyance too.
Right clicking a folder (using a DNN admin account to log onto the site with) and selecting "Open in Windows Explorer" pops a Windows authentication dialogue - no combination of machine, domain or dnn UID/PWD combos work. Clicking "Cancel" to the request brings up the requested folder in a windows explorer window. All functions then behave normally via webDAV.
The server is part of an Active Directory. We do not have AD enabled as a core DNN authentication mechanism (too many issues and still a work in progress), instead we use a commercial AD authentication module which works well at sifting through the roles and nested groups on the particular companies AD catalogue and mapping them correctly to DNN.
Something, somewhere is picking up the DMX webdav request and challenging it, and the same something moves aside on a click of the "Cancel" button.
Any ideas much appreciated.

Hi Peter,
On the Windows authentication prompt there is another aspect to the behaviour which might help pin down what's happening.
If I navigate to "My Network Places" (on an XP machine) where there is a previous entry for the dmx, I don't get prompted for authentication...
Even if I restart the machine completely and navigate back to "My Network Places" it works perfectly.
It is only from the "Open in Windows Explorer" option in the web browser that this challenge pops up, but, as stated earlier, clicking "Cancel" at the prompt allows the user to carry on webDAV-ing all day...

Hi Keith,
Recently I've begun to discover a new way of debugging customers' webDAV issues. If you get fiddler (www.fiddler2.com) you can get a trace of the traffic between you and the server. Fire it up and perform what you need to to get the undesired behavior (using IE) and save the http traffic using Fiddler in one go and send it to me by email (peter at bring2mind dot net). I'll look at it and compare it with 'good' sessions.
Please do not forget to mention the client O/S, IE and Office versions, as well as server's DNN and DMX versions. This will help me narrow down the issue.

Thanks for the link Keith. A first reaction from my side: I have personally used the MiniRedir 5 and 6 implementations as well as the MS DAV client. It was in fact the latter that was more difficult to stabalize. MiniRedir 6 is in Vista, BTW.
Having said that I'm curious as to your findings. You did make sure in IIS settings that only basic authentication was allowed?
